You have survived a few years in the sealed Warsaw Ghetto. Nazi-controlled Jewish policemen guard the inside of the wall, while Nazi and Polish officers patrol outside the ten-foot, brick and barbed-wire, walls.
You have befriended a Hungarian family who has a young daughter. You helped keep her warm in the night by giving her your extra blanket. The father of that family, Bartalan, is a doctor and was able to help treat your grandmother's cough and help her sleep. She is recovering nicely. This sunny morning you wake up to your mother asking,
"Will you go to work this morning?"
"Of course! I'm never late!" you reply.
"While you're out-" you swiftly stop your mother from completing that sentence, thinking she will announce that you have been smuggling in goods from outside the ghetto walls. Your mother smirks; she knows how to play along, and says, "Be safe. "Oh, and take this letter to the post office!"
You hug your mother and grandmother, and head off to work. You notice she is looking a little thin and make a mental note to steal her something special. She has been longing for even just a small pad of butter or dram of honey to spread over the bread rations.
You quietly hum to yourself while you think of the places you might steal or trade for some butter and honey.
It might seem strange for someone your age to be a police officer, however the Nazis need runners to send information and people who can move through the city unnoticed to find Jews still hiding in the city, outside of the walls of the Ghetto.
